Plastic Free Nilgiris

The Nilgiris (Blue Mountains), Queen of Hills in the Western Ghats is a unique biosphere with green lands at its peak and shoals (tropical montane forests) at the bottom. It is a blessed land with lot of offering to its inhabitants. Ooty or Ootacamund is the highly populated area in the district with Coonoor and Kotagiri following in terms of population. The district was developed by the British Raj in the early 18th century and became the Summer Capital of the Madras Presidency. Nilgiris has a fragile eco-system that has to be maintained and saved.

Say No to Plastics – Campaign to Save Nilgiris

In the early 2000, a new campaign was set up to save and protect the hill station. Operations Blue Mountain was started by the then District Collector of Nilgiris, Supriya Sahu with the prime focus on “Say No To Plastics” to cleanse the environment of the plastic threat through meticulous and strategic planning.

Even today the campaign is followed by the people with their utmost love for Nilgiris. Several NGO and Clubs take it to the streets focusing on creating an awareness to cleanse the environment.

Anti plastic campaigns has been intensifying in Ooty for more than a decade now and with these regular campaigns there have been enormous changes in the minds of people living here. Today, Ooty is clean and green with fresh air for every living being. In order to maintain and save the eco-system, we work on the same initiate to save our eco system.

We request our tourist and people visiting the Nilgiris to kindly co-operate with us to save our green environment by not using any plastic materials. We need to preserve this green eco system for the next-next generations of people who will live here.

Tourists can use eco-friendly products such as plate and cups made from areca nut tree bark, and spoons made of coconut shell. These are products that do not harm our eco system in any way and are degradable.
